STATEMENT: Hinojosa on President Trump’s Support for Suspending the Gas Tax

Greg Abbott has refused bipartisan calls to suspend Texas’s state gas tax, even as prices reach $4 a gallon

Austin, TX – Following President Donald Trump’s support for a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax, Democratic nominee for Governor Gina Hinojosa released the following statement:

“While Donald Trump backs a federal gas tax suspension, Greg Abbott is standing between Texas families and relief at the pump. Suspending the gas tax to lower costs for working families isn’t partisan, but Abbott still won’t lift a finger to do it. Working Texans could save more than $5 every time they fill up if we suspend both the federal and state gas taxes. Texans are fed up with Abbott playing politics instead of lowering costs. As governor, I’ll get things done to make life more affordable for working families on day one.”

Last month, Hinojosa called on Abbott to suspend the state gas tax. Since then, gas hit $4 a gallon in Texas – $1 more than this time last year, with diesel $2 more than last year. Texans are making it clear: they are sick and tired of Abbott using his office for political theater rather than lowering costs, and they’re ready to elect Gina Hinojosa this November.
