Hinojosa to Abbott: Stop Waiting on Washington, Suspend the Gas Tax Today and Save Texans 20 Cents a Gallon
Austin, TX — Following James Talarico’s call for federal gas tax relief, Gina Hinojosa held a press conference calling on Governor Greg Abbott to use his emergency powers to suspend the state gas tax immediately, which costs working Texans roughly $8 million per day.
“Washington needs to act to bring down gas prices, but right now, Greg Abbott has the power to make gas 20 cents cheaper for every Texan driving to work,” said Gina Hinojosa. “Abbott uses his office for political theater, the only question is whether he’ll use it to help working families. Texans are drowning right now, they deserve a Governor who will provide a lifeline.”
The Governor has unilateral authority to suspend regulatory statutes during a declared disaster. With Texans struggling to afford everything from gas to medicine to groceries, suspending the state’s roughly 20-cent-per-gallon tax would deliver immediate, direct relief. Families, commuters, truck drivers, and small business owners are all squeezed by long drives, rising insurance costs, and stagnant wages.
