STATEMENT: Hinojosa on Greg Abbott Grandstanding on Public Safety
Austin, TX – This morning, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa released the following statement as Greg Abbott tries to distract from his record of failing Texans on public safety just weeks before Election Day.
“Greg Abbott spent $11 billion in taxpayer money to grandstand, took half a decade to get it back, and Texans still don’t have their money,” said Hinojosa. “Billions of working Texans’ tax dollars used to pay for locking up immigrants, to pay for prosecuting them, and to pay for their defense — all for them to go back into our communities. Now, Abbott wants people to thank him for wasting their money and taking years to reimburse them. Abbott once bragged about suing the federal government every day, and now he capitulates to them. As governor, I’ll put in the work to secure the border, not waste working Texans’ money on political theater.”
Greg Abbott claims to care about law and order in Texas, but his record says otherwise:
- Abbott threatened to cut $200 million in public safety funding in Houston, Dallas, and Austin.
- Abbott spent tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to set up a Flock surveillance state without approval from the legislature – which continues to surveil Texans as local officials “expect Abbott will reinstate funding” for them.
- Abbott helped free an ICE agent accused of second-degree assault and falsely reporting a crime in another state, even after receiving an extradition order.
- Abbott set free the convicted murderer of a U.S. Air Force veteran, ignoring the family’s plea to keep him locked up.
