STATEMENT: Hinojosa on Abbott’s ERCOT CEO’s Salary Doubling While Texans Suffer Skyrocketing Electricity Bills

Austin, TX – Today, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa released the following statement after the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) board voted to give themselves a 30% raise and double their CEO’s salary: 

“Abbott’s handpicked ERCOT board members are giving themselves a 30% raise and paying its CEO $6.4 million – Abbott knew and should have stopped them. This comes at a time when millions of people’s electricity bills are rising and Texas leads the nation in the most electric disconnections. This is more of the same from Abbott and his government’s corrupt playbook: help the rich and powerful get richer by making working Texans foot the bill. 

“Abbott let his billionaire donors cash in after Winter Storm Uri, and now people are paying more per month for their electricity bills in the middle of a high-cost economy. On Day One as governor, I’ll freeze residential electricity rates and make corporations finally pay their fair share.”
