STATEMENT: Hinojosa on Abbott Ignoring NBC/Telemundo and Nexstar Debates

Austin, TX – Today, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa released the following statement in response to Greg Abbott continuing to ignore all requests to debate. Hinojosa has called on Abbott to join a September debate hosted by Nexstar and an October debate hosted by NBCUniversal Studios in Texas and Hearst Newspapers in Texas.

“Everything that comes out of Abbott’s mouth is a lie, and he won’t debate me because I will call him out on it,” Hinojosa said. “Every day that he refuses to debate is another day he’s proving just how weak of a governor he is, who’s scared of being held accountable for his failed record.

“Working people are struggling mightily, and they are tired of Abbott trying to distract them with culture wars while he gives his billionaire buddies and data center donors handouts, forcing Texans to foot the bill. Voters deserve to hear a vision for Texas where we save our public schools, put money in people’s pockets, and bring back the American Dream.”

It’s no surprise that Abbott doesn’t want to be held accountable for his record. This is the same governor who spent recent months branding Texas the “epicenter” of AI development and championing the industry his giveaway attracted – before flip-flopping on data centers for political points. While Abbott refuses to debate, Hinojosa is surging in the polls, with new polls showing a 1-point race. Texans are ready for change, and they’re ready to elect Gina Hinojosa this November.
