RELEASE: Hinojosa Honors Voting Rights Act, Outlines Redistricting Stakes of Texas’ Governor’s Race

Hinojosa: “Every American should care about the governor’s race in Texas, because the fate of the union depends on Texas.”

HOUSTON, TX – Tonight, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa delivered remarks on the critical stakes of the 2026 election. Speaking in Houston – where Greg Abbott’s extreme gerrymandering silenced hundreds of thousands of Texans’ voices – Hinojosa commemorated the Voting Rights Act and outlined how this year’s governor’s race will shape national redistricting for decades to come.

“A rigged map still has to land on the governor’s desk. The governor of Texas can veto it,” said Hinojosa. “That makes this office the last line standing between one party and permanent control of the country, and it makes this race the most important in America. Texas needs a governor who will veto rigged maps. I will be that governor.”

“Republicans in Austin who have run Texas for thirty years have already told us what they will do next. Next year they will slice up the state to erase five Democratic seats in Congress. Two years after that, Texas will gain five more seats from the census,” said Hinojosa. “Erase ten Democratic seats in Texas, and it is over. No Democratic majority in Congress, not for just an election cycle, likely for a generation. Texas becomes too big. The math no longer works.” 

Texas controls nearly 10% of Congress. Greg Abbott kicked off a redistricting war, and after the Voting Rights Act was gutted, he is coming back for round 2 next year. The path to a lasting majority cannot ignore the reality of Texas.
