Austin, TX – This week, Democratic candidate for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa joined MS NOW’s The Briefing and CNN’s Laura Coates Live to discuss the current state of the race – where Hinojosa is within just one point of 12-year incumbent Greg Abbott in the latest Fox News poll – and the stakes of this November’s election.
“People want change in Texas,” Hinojosa told MS NOW’s Michael Steel. “So yes, [Republicans] are scared, and they should be. What we are hearing all across this state is people are tired of paying more and getting less under Greg Abbott.”
On the national implications of the Texas Governor’s race, Hinojosa told CNN, “Republicans in Texas said they’re coming back next year to redraw maps after the gutting of the Voting Rights Act by the U.S. Supreme Court. When that happens, we will lose five Democrats in Congress.”
Hinojosa added, “Two years later, we will gain another 4 to 5 seats in Congress because we’re growing faster than other states. And because congressional seats equate to electoral votes, there can be no Democratic control of the White House. The fate of the union depends on Texas – that’s what this election is about.”
Hinojosa also spoke about the significance of the Latino vote in Texas – which new public polling shows swung 40 points in her direction from May to July – saying, “I’m born and raised in a border town. What we see is that people are mad at immigration raids, attacks on our families and our communities that resulted in a man being killed in Houston just a few weeks ago. When law enforcement and unmarked cars shoot first and ask questions later, nobody is safe. People are mad. People want change.”

- Greg Abbott’s bid for another term as Texas governor has suddenly become a one-point race, according to a new Fox News poll that puts the Republican incumbent just ahead of Democrat Gina Hinojosa.
- Abbott leads Hinojosa 50% to 49% among 1,006 registered Texas voters surveyed from Thursday through Monday, a result that falls comfortably within the poll’s plus-or-minus 3 percentage point margin of error. In other words, the headline is an Abbott lead, but the practical takeaway is a statistical tie, as El Paso Times reported.
- The poll’s cross-tabs offer Hinojosa a potentially powerful coalition: She leads Abbott by 16 points among Latino voters, 21 points among moderates and 27 points among independents. She also holds advantages among suburban voters and Black voters, although those subgroup results can carry larger levels of uncertainty than the statewide number.
- Hinojosa has framed the race around rising costs, public schools and what she calls an effort to put money into the pockets of working Texans, according to the El Paso Times’ account of the campaign’s response.

- As is the case with the Texas electorate in general, inflation is also the top concern among Hispanic voters, with nearly 4 in 10 citing it as the deciding factor in their vote, and a similar proportion saying they feel they are falling behind financially. The gap in enthusiasm between the parties is also evident in this segment, with more Hispanic Democrats than Hispanic Republicans motivated and interested in participating in the election.
- The poll also found that more than half of Hispanic voters have a favorable view of Talarico (57%), Hinojosa (53%), and the Democratic Party (53%). Overall, the numbers show a significant decline for the GOP among this voting bloc, as Trump won by just 1 point over Kamala Harris among Texas Hispanics (50% to 49%).
