Gina Hinojosa Launches Non-Partisan Organizing Program: “Team Texas Public Schools”
Hinojosa: “This plan is not Republican, it is not Democratic. Texas public schools transcend politics, but they cannot support another four years of Greg Abbott. They will not survive.
Austin, TX – Today, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa rolled out Team Texas Public Schools, a new non-partisan organizing program designed to coach and engage parents, teachers, and administrators – regardless of party – to fight school closures across the state. Hinojosa was joined by dozens of parents, teachers, and students at Pease Elementary School, which closed in 2020 due to budget cuts, after serving Austin families for 144 years.

“There can be no American Dream without strong public schools, but in Texas, our schools are on life support,” said Hinojosa. “We have 100 schools shutting down in this state; we have over 150 school districts operating at four days a week. This is happening all over the state because Greg Abbott has starved our public schools for years.”
“I’ve locked arms with Republicans all over the state in defense of our public schools,” Hinojosa said. “We are launching Team Texas Public Schools as an organizing effort so that everybody who loves their public schools can get involved, do the training to know how we can bring more people into this effort, and defend and protect our public schools.”

Hinojosa outlined her plans to fix Texas’s broken education system, starting with “firing Mike Morath and hiring an educator to be our Texas education commissioner.” Hinojosa also committed to pausing the “rigged A-F accountability system and STAAR test, while ensuring real accountability,” and wiping “clean all the corrupt vendor contracts and use that money to pay Texas public school teachers, because the most important thing we can do for our children’s education is to put a great teacher in the classroom.”
Gina Hinojosa came to this fight as a mom when they tried to close her son’s school. From the Austin ISD to the state legislature, she’s spent her career fighting for our neighborhood schools, because access to a good education is enshrined in the Texas Constitution.
