NEW: Hinojosa Calls Out Greg Abbott for Failing to Fight for $11 Billion Owed to Texas Taxpayers
Hinojosa: “The middle class in Texas is struggling with the basics. My interest right now is in delivering real relief.”
Austin, TX – Today, Gina Hinojosa, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor, held a press conference calling on Greg Abbott to demand the federal government return $11 billion in Texas taxpayer money spent on Operation Lone Star – funds that Congress appropriated for reimbursement over a year ago and that Abbott hasn’t lifted a finger to collect. A year ago, Abbott promised Texans they would be “fully reimbursed.”

“It’s time for Greg Abbott to do his job, follow the law, and get our money back,” said Gina Hinojosa. “Texas has spent more money on border security than any other state by far, and Texans were promised that this money was for us. Abbott bragged about it. I’m calling on Greg Abbott to have urgency about getting that money for Texans.
“This is a governor who struggles to find power at a time when people need it. Whenever his billionaire donors need it, he can move mountains to deliver for them. We need a governor who’s going to actually put aside partisanship and deliver real results for Texas, not just make threats about taking away money from our communities.”
From the grocery checkout to the electric bill to the rising cost of homeowners’ insurance, Texans are paying more for the basics than ever. With $11 billion, Texas could send a $1,000 reimbursement check to every household, provide property tax relief for every household making less than $75,000 a year – nearly half of all Texas families – or pay for health insurance for every restaurant worker in Texas for 3 years.
