STATEMENT: Hinojosa on Greg Abbott Selling Boca Chica State Park to Trillionaire Donor Elon Musk

Austin, TX – Today, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa released the following statement in response to new reporting that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission – appointed entirely by Greg Abbott – has planned a closed-door meeting to sell 1,300 acres of public land in South Texas, including Boca Chica State Park, to trillionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

“Like so many families in the Valley, I spent my summers at Boca Chica Beach,” Hinojosa said. “Now, after 12 years of selling out Texas to his corporate donors and making working people foot the bill, Greg Abbott is handing over our land to the world’s only trillionaire. Let me be clear: Texas is not for sale.”

“This is the One Fight that unites us all: Are we going to be a Texas by and for the people, or is this the billionaires’ world and the rest of us just live here? As Governor, I’ll protect our land and our livelihoods – not sell out to the highest bidder – because Texans deserve a leader who puts the people first.”

Greg Abbott has given billions of dollars in grants and tax breaks to Musk’s companies in Texas, including a $1.66 billion tax break shortly after Musk donated $500,000 to Abbott’s reelection campaign this year. In July, Abbott came under fire from his own party for his relationship with Musk after calling the Texas Broadband Office to award Musk’s Starlink $110 million upfront, leading to an audit of the office.

Last month, Hinojosa, in her official capacity as a State Representative, filed a public information request for inspection of all documents exchanged between Greg Abbott’s office and Elon Musk and his companies, including the emails provided to the Texas Newsroom, which Abbott blocked the release of and then redacted because they were too “intimate and embarrassing” to be made public.
