STATEMENT: Hinojosa on Greg Abbott Accepting $5 Million from Elon Musk in Last-Ditch Effort Before Election Day
After being bankrolled by billionaires and AI data centers, Abbott has been forced to spend $181 million for the toughest fight of his political career
Austin, TX – Today, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa released the following statement on Greg Abbott’s last campaign finance report. In the last 30 days, Abbott accepted $21 million from just 65 donors, including millions from billionaire CEOs and data center corporations.
“This is the One Fight of this election: does Texas belong to the people, or is this the billionaires’ world and we just live here?” Hinojosa said. “In less than one month, Elon Musk gave Greg Abbott $5 million to try and buy this election so that he can keep buying up Texans’ land, energy, and resources.
“Texans are fed up with a governor who does the bidding of his billionaire donors while leaving Texans to fend for themselves. As Governor, I will end Abbott’s years of corruption and secure the American Dream for Texans by saving Texas public schools and putting money in your pocket. Change is coming to the Governor’s Mansion because voters know they deserve better than a leader who sells them out to his billionaire donors, and no amount of money can stop it.”
Abbott’s fundraising is entirely dependent on billionaire donors, with over $20 million of the total $26 million raised from just 39 six-figure donations. See more about the donors in Abbott’s recent filing below:
- Elon Musk – $5,000,000. This donation makes Musk Abbott’s single-largest donor this cycle and brings his total to $5.5 million. Musk received more than $1.7 billion in state contracts and tax breaks from Abbott in the last year, and recent reports show Abbott’s TPWD plans to sell Boca Chica State Park to Elon Musk right after the election.
- Republican Governors Association – $3,000,000. After burning through over $150 million already this cycle, Abbott is still on the defense against Hinojosa’s growing momentum.
- Anthropic AI – $500,000. Anthropic’s co-founder Thomas Brown and Anthropic’s Political Action Committee are banking big on Abbott so they can capitalize on his plan to make Texas the “epicenter of AI.”
- Harlan Crow – $250,000. The Nazi memorabilia owner has given hundreds of thousands to Greg Abbott, especially as Crow is trying to branch into building and maintaining data centers in the state.
- Arcilia Acosta – $100,000. Acosta is the CEO of Carcon Industries, which receives millions of dollars from state contracts for major public infrastructure, transportation, and educational construction projects. Greg Abbott appointed Acosta to the Texas Tech University System in 2021.
