IN THE LEAD: NPR/Marist Poll Shows Hinojosa Beating Abbott by 3 Points As Abbott Continues to Sink

Abbott continues to flail as Hinojosa maintains momentum in TX gov polls

AUSTIN, TX – A new NPR/Marist poll shows Gina Hinojosa winning the Texas Governor’s race at 49-46%, showing back-to-back polls of her beating Greg Abbott. Hinojosa has made sweeping gains across the board, especially among Independents, non-White voters, and gaining with former Abbott voters.

Key Findings:

  • Hinojosa has taken a 3 point lead at 49-46% and is pulling ahead of Abbott – despite Abbott outspending Hinojosa by a wide margin.
  • Hinojosa is up with Independents by 13 points over Abbott, while Abbott’s favorability among Independents has plummeted to -56.
  • Hinojosa has a +19 net favorability swing, with her +11 favorability rating versus Abbott’s -8 favorability rating. 
  • Hinojosa is also pulling 9% of self identified Republicans, especially those who are “breaking rank” and punishing Abbott for selling out Texas to his billionaire donors
  • Hinojosa is leading non-white voters by 24 points, 59-35%, and wins Hispanic-heavy regions like the Southwest 61-36%.
  • While Hinojosa has more room to grow for the rest of the cycle, Abbott is trapped by his name and record, and is even polling at a 13% unfavorable from his own party.
  • Not only is this a strong poll for Hinojosa, she is particularly strong with Women, who poll at 57-40%, under 45 voters 60%-33%, and Gen Z voters 71-19%.

“Texans are ready for change, and in November, we are going to prove it,” Hinojosa said. “We are building a movement for all the Texans who are tired of being sold out to Greg Abbott’s billionaires and just want to build a better life for themselves and for their families. I’ve said this since we launched in October, but it’s worth repeating: don’t let them tell you it can’t happen in Texas, because it already is.”

This is the 11th poll showing Hinojosa within the margin of error, following a ReconMR/Siena poll that had her leading by 4 points and surging with key demographics she needs to win in November. Since launching, Hinojosa has closed the gap from an 8-point race to consistently within the margin of error as Texans get to know her and are behind her.
