NEW: Follow the Money – Abbott’s Backers vs. the People Powering Gina Hinojosa
Austin, TX – Greg Abbott’s newest campaign finance filing answers a simple question: who does this governor actually work for? Abbott’s campaign is powered by the billionaires, energy magnates, and corporate interests who bankroll Abbott and cash in on his favors while working families in this state pay the Greg Abbott Corruption Tax. Meanwhile, Democratic nominee for Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa’s campaign has been powered by small dollar donors who believe that this state belongs to the people, not the billionaires.
“I’m proud to have so many Texans chipping into this campaign, and they’re with me because they know it’s time for change,” said Hinojosa. “My plan for Texas is simple and it’s short: save our public schools and put money back in your pocket. It’s a plan for the people, powered by the people.”
“Follow Greg Abbott’s money and you’ll find everything wrong with government,” said Hinojosa campaign spokesperson Tommy Kubitschek. “He’ll pocket a million dollars from the man whose company profited off a grid collapse that killed Texans, and he’ll take a check from a billionaire who collects Nazi memorabilia. Gina’s campaign is powered by Texans – tens of thousands of them chipping in thirteen bucks at a time because they believe we can have the American Dream in Texas again.”
Abbott’s fundraising is overwhelmingly dependent on a tiny group of six-figure donors, not hardworking Texans – nearly four out of every five dollars Greg Abbott raised came from just 79 six-figure donor records. This is the same governor who has given out a billion dollars in no bid contracts to his donors since 2022, and he’s not slowing down.
Gina Hinojosa’s campaign is built by a different Texas. More than 74,000 donors have pitched in at a median gift of $13, and 97.5% of contributions came in at $100 or less, the overwhelming majority from inside Texas. Abbott is bought by the interests profiting off the Greg Abbott Corruption Tax. Gina is funded by the Texans paying it.
See more about the donors in Abbott’s recent filing below:
- Nearly 4 of every 5 dollars Abbott raised came from just 79 six-figure donor records.
- Just 100 donors accounted for $21.36M — 83.7% of everything Abbott raised.
- 15 donors gave $500K+ ($9.82M, 38.5% of the haul); 34 gave $250K+ ($14.82M, 58.1%). This is not a grassroots operation.
- 8 donors Abbott appointed to state boards and commissions gave $4.77M combined – 18.7% of his entire haul.
- $3.65M direct from business entities, ~$1.4M from PACs, and at least $4.15M from oil, gas, energy and utility interests.
Just a few of Abbott’s donor friends:
- Kelcy Warren / Energy Transfer — $500K this period, on top of the $1M after the 2021 session; his company booked roughly $2.4B around Winter Storm Uri.
- Elon Musk / SpaceX — $500K, after Abbott handed SpaceX a $17.3M state semiconductor grant in March 2025.
- Mackenzie Price / Alpha School — $500K, as Abbott stands up a $1B program routing public money to private schools.
- Harlan Crow — $250K, from the billionaire at the center of the Clarence Thomas gift scandal whose private collection of Nazi memorabilia has drawn attention.
