On Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Gina Hinojosa Shares Her Story and Commitment to Restore Reproductive Freedom
| In new video, gubernatorial candidate reflects her story and vows to end Texas’s extreme abortion ban Austin, TX — On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Gina Hinojosa is releasing a deeply personal video sharing her own experience with pregnancy loss and why she is committed to ensuring that every woman in Texas has the right to make these personal health care decisions with her doctor and within the privacy of her family. In 2003, Gina and her husband were overjoyed because she was pregnant with their first child. But late in her second trimester, she received devastating news: her pregnancy was non-viable. She was told she had a week to decide whether or not to terminate the pregnancy. After deliberating with her husband, her family, and her priest, Gina made the difficult decision to carry her pregnancy to term. Her daughter didn’t make it. Being faced with that decision reinforced something she already knew: the government’s jurisdiction should not enter her body, or any person’s body. “As governor, I will ensure that every woman has the right to privacy, dignity, and care,” said Hinojosa. “Traveling the state, I’ve heard countless stories from women who are afraid to get pregnant, and I want to remind them that they are not alone. Republicans like Greg Abbott have taken what should be a joyful experience and turned it into fear and anxiety. When I’m Governor, women will no longer have to risk their lives just to start a family.” Today, millions of women in America no longer have decision-making power over their own bodies. In Texas, women across the state have lost their lives as a result of the extreme abortion ban championed by Greg Abbott and Republican legislators. Women facing medical emergencies have been turned away from hospitals. Doctors have been forced to choose between providing life-saving care and facing criminal prosecution.
