Austin American-Statesman Endorses Gina Hinojosa for Texas Governor

Austin, TX — Today, the Austin American-Statesman editorial board endorsed State Representative Gina Hinojosa for Governor of Texas, calling her “the champion Democrats need” to win in November and praising her vision for addressing the state’s most pressing challenges.

“At a moment when the state’s economic success is increasingly divorced from the well-being of many Texans, Hinojosa offers a compelling alternative,” the editorial board wrote.

The Statesman highlighted Hinojosa’s focus on issues that transcend partisan divisions: “Notably, these issues aren’t left vs. right or urban vs. rural. They are priorities that would broadly benefit Texans.”

The editorial emphasized Hinojosa’s preparedness for the role, concluding: “And in every sense of the word, Hinojosa is ready to bring it.”

“I’m honored to have the Austin American-Statesman’s endorsement,” said Hinojosa. “Texans are ready for leadership that puts working families ahead of billionaire donors and corporate special interests. Whether it’s affordable healthcare, quality public schools, or holding our government accountable, these aren’t partisan issues—they’re Texan priorities that Greg Abbott has failed to deliver on for over a decade.”

Throughout her campaign, Hinojosa has championed affordable healthcare, quality neighborhood schools, housing affordability, and government accountability—priorities that resonate across Texas communities regardless of political affiliation.

Austin American-Statesman: Hinojosa is the champion Democrats need in governor’s race | Endorsement

  • Democratic voters across Texas are getting to meet the Gina Hinojosa that Austinites have long known: a staunch defender of public schools, an effective policy wonk in the Texas House, and, before that, an Austin school board member who understood as a mom how painful budget decisions land on Texas families.
  • Now Hinojosa is the clear front-runner in the Democratic primary for governor. She earns our endorsement in the March 3 primary as the most qualified candidate to fight for the families left out of the so-called ‘Texas Miracle.’ At a moment when the state’s economic success is increasingly divorced from the well-being of many Texans, Hinojosa offers a compelling alternative.
  • “We are a world economic power, but Texans are struggling,” Hinojosa told our Editorial Board. She notes that Texas leads most other states in wrong-headed indicators: the highest rate of people without health insurance, one of the largest populations of low-wage workers, and the “most overworked state,” where people spend more time at their jobs than anywhere else in America.
  • “We need more of that prosperity that belongs to working Texans, and we’re not getting it,” said Hinojosa, a civil rights and labor lawyer who was first elected in 2016 to a Central Austin seat in the Texas House.
  • Her priorities include unwinding Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s signature private school voucher program and investing instead in public schools; expanding access to health care; and steering the state’s financial incentives toward the small businesses that drive job growth instead of major corporations that pile up profits…
  • Notably, these issues aren’t left vs. right or urban vs. rural. They are priorities that would broadly benefit Texans…
  • “We’ve had 30 years of one-party control, no accountability, and I just think politics is broken,” she said. “Texans are done with politics as usual. They are looking for change.”
  • And in every sense of the word, Hinojosa is ready to bring it. She deserves Democrats’ support March 3.
