STATEMENT: Hinojosa Applauds TX Democratic Upset as Taylor Rehmet Wins SD-9 Special Election
Austin, TX — Today, Taylor Rehmet won an upset special election victory in the deep-red gerrymandered Texas Senate District 9 special election. The union president and veteran defeated his Republican opponent in a seat President Trump carried by 17 points in 2024. Following this victory, gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Taylor Rehmet on this incredible victory for working Texans. Taylor’s win shows that when you put workers first, fight for public schools, and stand up to corruption, Texans will stand with you, even in the reddest districts.
“Things are changing in Texas. We are seeing it all across the state, not only in special elections, but in the people that are organized and energized to push back against the corruption happening in Austin. Working families are ready for a fresh start, and we are going to keep that momentum going all the way through November. Don’t let anyone tell you it can’t happen in Texas, because it already is. As Steve Bannon himself has said, ‘As Tarrant County goes, so goes Texas. As Texas goes, so goes the world.’”
Hinojosa joined Rehmet on the campaign trail, knocking doors with volunteers in recent weeks. Special elections like SD-9 are key indicators of the change that is possible when Democrats put working families first and refuse to back down from corporate power and corruption. Rehmet adds to the growing list of upset victories for Democrats since November, from a Leander council seat to the mayor of Robstown to a school board in Harris County.
